Ordering Custom DTF Transfers Has Never Been Easier

Whether you're a first-time buyer or a seasoned decorator, ordering custom Direct to Film (DTF) transfers online is a straightforward process — once you know what to expect. This guide walks you through every step, from preparing your artwork to pressing your finished transfer onto a garment.

Step 1: Prepare Your Artwork

The quality of your DTF transfer starts with your artwork file. Here's what you need:

File format: PNG with a transparent background is ideal. PDF and AI files are also accepted.

Resolution: 300 DPI minimum for sharp, professional results. Low-resolution files will print blurry.

Color mode: RGB color mode. DTF printing uses CMYK inks, but submit your file in RGB for the most accurate color output.

No white background: Make sure your design has a transparent (checkered) background, not a white one — unless white is part of your design.

Pro Tips:

Avoid Glows & Shadows: Transparent glows or soft drop shadows can sometimes print with a white "halo." Use solid colors for the cleanest edges.

Check Your Lines: Ensure all lines are at least 2 pixels thick; anything thinner may not pick up enough adhesive to bond to the fabric.

True Transparency: Double-check that your "background" is actually transparent and not just a solid white box.

Don't Mirror: Upload your design exactly as you want it to look. Our software handles the mirroring for you!

Step 2: Choose Your Transfer Type

At Make It Personal, we offer two main options:

Individual transfers: Single designs printed and cut to size. Great for one-off orders or testing a new design.

Gang sheets: Multiple designs arranged on a single large sheet. The most cost-effective option for decorators who need several different designs or multiples of the same design.

Not sure which to choose? If you have more than 2–3 designs to order, a gang sheet almost always saves you money.

Step 3: Select Your Size

For gang sheets, choose the sheet size that fits your designs. Our sizes range from 22" x 24" all the way up to 22" x 240".

A few guidelines:

Measure your designs and add them up to estimate how much sheet space you need.

Leave about 0.25" between designs for clean cutting.

When in doubt, size up — you can always fill extra space with duplicates of your best-selling designs.

Step 4: Upload Your File & Place Your Order

Once your artwork is ready and you've selected your size:

Visit our gang sheet product page and select your size.

Upload your print-ready PNG file using the file upload field.

Add to cart and complete checkout.

You'll receive an order confirmation email with your proof details.

Step 5: Receive & Store Your Transfers

Our transfers will arrive rolled or flat, depending on the size. To keep them in top condition:

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Keep them flat or loosely rolled — avoid sharp creases.

DTF transfers have a shelf life of 12–24 months when stored properly.

Step 6: Press & Enjoy

You're ready to press! Check out our guide on How to Apply DTF Transfers for detailed heat press settings and application tips.
